This structure - the first new construction seen on the grounds in quite some time - will serve as our Ockers Marine Transportation Center. Development is a two-part undertaking. The initial stage of the project involved the renovation and extension of the marine railway, which now extends from the boat basin into the building site.
Construction of the post-and-beam shop is the second and final phase of this project. When completed, the new facility will greatly enhance programs, volunteer opportunities, and wooden boat maintenance - especially for our USCG-certified, National Historic Landmark oyster sloop, Priscilla.
This facility will evoke the dedicated work of boatyards once so prevalent along the shores of Long Island. In recreating a working chapter of our maritime history, the Museum will be better able to portray and interpret the once thriving shellfishing and boat-building industries on the Great South Bay.
