Honoring the Unkechaug
The Long Island Maritime Museum is located within the ancestral lands of the Unkechaug people.
The Unkechaug once controlled several thousand acres in what is now southern Brookhaven, today the tribe
occupies the Poospatuck reservation in Mastic at the Western limit of their historical lands. We at the
museum recognize the role that imbalanced colonial land deals and treaties played in displacement of these peoples.
We also acknowledge the present day Unkechaug people for their ongoing commitment to the
region and contributions to the local culture.
