History & Heritage

"Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty
and the test of our civilization."
                                                                                                        Mahatma Gandhi
About

At the Long Island Maritime Museum, we are committed to building an inclusive community and supporting a diverse population.  This commitment extends to bringing attention to the history and heritage of historically underrepresented groups. We recognize that both our collection and our community represent a wide range of cultures and identities. As an institution we strive to include all of those identities. In the pursuit of this goal, we have devoted this section of our website to highlighting these historically marginalized groups and exploring their connections to Long Island maritime history.

Throughout the year this page presents a rotating digital exhibit to celebrate the culture and history of some of these groups which have long been disenfranchised to varying degrees. Following the calendar of Heritage and Awareness months we take the opportunity to spotlight some of these groups in further detail. Links to our past heritage month spotlights can be found below. Additionally, we acknowledge that inclusion is an ongoing and ever-changing issue that we, as an institution, will have to ceaselessly work to better address. As such, we always welcome the voices of all members of our community to help us shape the Long Island Maritime Museum’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
