VOLUNTEERS |
Docents or Tour Guides
We need people who'd like to help out with our school tours. These morning programs are primarily in the spring and fall and last about an hour and a half. We provide training and prepared material on Museum exhibits to enable volunteers to give short 15-20 minute overviews of the various facets of the LlMM (Main Building, Oyster House, Bayman's Cottage, Small Craft Building, etc.)
Boatbuilders-in-Training
We are looking for volunteers to help
build the raffle boats and repair other small wooden boats in the Penney Boat Shop and the Moonbeam Shop. No skills are required, just interest and the desire to learn about wooden boat building.
Adopt-A-Boat
We're hoping some folks would be interested in "adopting" a boat in Small Craft Building. A few of our vessels need a little TLC, some more so than others, but nothing much more than cosmetic work. Many just want a good scrubbing and polishing, while others will require a little more—sanding, painting and varnishing. "Adoptive parents" could choose to support their boats financially (by purchasing the materials required for maintenance) or by doing the work themselves, or better yet, by doing both. We promise you they don't eat much and never ask to borrow the car. Be a part of preserving all Long Island's treasurers. |

Volunteers are probably the most important part
of the Long Island Maritime Museum!
Volunteers help us teach thousands of students each year
about Long Island's maritime history and ecology.
Volunteers rebuild and restore the Museum's collection of vessels.
Volunteers build our raffle boats each year.
Volunteers help maintain our buildings and grounds.
Volunteers help design exhibits, help in the office and maintain the gift shop. Volunteers are the backbone of our major events such as the Seafood Festival. Volunteers are part of our family.
As a not-for-profit museum,
the Museum is staffed with only two full-timers and five part-timers
so volunteers help us to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage! |

Gardener
We want our grounds to look as good as our boats. We're hoping to find someone who is interested in maintaining and planting the beds in the front of the Main building
and the back courtyard. |
Salt Water Washdown
We need someone, who either lives near the Museum or doesn't mind the drive, to give Priscilla a salt water wash-down every other day and a scrub-down every other week. It can be a shared or team job. Imagine how refreshing this could be during the dog days of August. |
Children's Vacation Programs
Our summer Barrens to Bay program is a science and craft activities offered during July and August. We also offer school recess programs during the Mid-Wmter and Spring Breaks. We're looking for members interested in helping develop these workshops. |
